The self-guided tour is a wonderful way to explore Gusbourne Estate and the glorious Kent countryside we're nestled in on foot. The 35 minute walk follows the numbered waypoint markers on our complimentary maps that you can pick up from The Nest before setting off. There is no cost to this self-guided experience and you're welcome to partake on the walk anytime daily between 11:00 and 16:00.
Along the way, you will see rows and rows of our Estate-owned vines, which are hand-harvested every autumn by our dedicated team of pickers. The grapes then make the short journey back from the vineyards to our winery, which sits behind The Nest, via tractor before being loaded into our presses to start their journey of becoming Gusbourne sparkling and still wines.
On your stroll, you will also notice a wide array of flora and fauna. Between the rows of vines, we cultivate grass, wildflowers and other plants like Red Clover, Winter Vetch and Phacelia. These plants are good for the soil structure and help to control the vine through competition for soil resources. They also increase biodiversity and promote soil life.
Rabbits and hares are often seen hopping between the vines, as well as a multitude of pheasants that shelter in the surrounding cover crops and woodlands. We also see and hear a wide variety of other birdlife around our vineyards - buzzards, cuckoos, chaffinches, goldfinches, green woodpeckers, redwings, sparrowhawks and kestrels. Let us know what you spot along the way!
We hope you enjoy your walk, and ask that you keep dogs on the lead at all times, follow marked footpaths, and avoid eating the grapes. When you're finished, please do pop in to The Nest for a taste of our wines, or to purchase a bottle to take away with you.
Please check in at the Nest before setting off, so that we know you are here. This is for your own safety as we are a working vineyard and want to keep you clear of any machinery that may be working. On occasion, we may have to close the route for seasonal vineyard work. Staff at the Nest will provide you with up-to-date information. Access to the winery is by guided tour only. Please call the Nest on 01233 884680 if you have any questions along the way, or run into any problems.
